ICELAND 冰屿
"Iceland " is a site-specific installation. Two geographically distinct environments, the northern landscapes of Iceland and the southern coasts of Hainan Island, inspired Iceland. The work uses a montage of light and form to juxtapose and reconfigure contrasting geological landscapes, creating a space that lies between reality and illusion—an experimental field of perception, memory, and media.
The installation began with detailed 3D scans of stones collected near a stream at the exhibition site. The surface textures, spectral data, and reflectivity of these materials were recorded and then processed through algorithmic modeling. Using CNC fabrication, the artist transformed the data into luminous composite structures with embedded LED systems. These LEDs reproduce the RGB color values first captured by the camera, which were later analyzed by computer algorithms. Through this machine-based translation, colors perceived by digital sensors are turned into a tangible visual language, revealing a shared mechanism of color perception between humans and machines. Within this dialogue, color continuously shifts and overlaps, merging different terrains on the surface of the stones. This process challenges our normal understanding of space and environment while reactivating the memory and illusion of color within the media system.
As night falls, a soft blue halo gradually envelops the installation. Viewers walk through gentle layers of light and shadow, as if moving through a landscape that feels both real and imagined—not representation, but a surreal environment formed through the combined perception of machine vision, visual memory, and human imagination.
