Jiayu Liu (b. 1990, Liaoning, China)

Known for her immersive, evocative, and poetic media installations, Jiayu Liu is a media artist based in London. Jiayu’s interdisciplinary practice reimagines the entangled relationships between nature, perception, and computation. Rooted in Eastern poetics and philosophical speculation, her installations treat data as material flow, engaging with ecological systems, machine learning, and embodied interfaces.

In her recent explorations, Jiayu investigates “machine perception” and “topological co-creation” as forms of language. Since 2023, she has been developing Jiayu*. This AI-driven algorithm utilizes multimodal inputs (including visual data, linguistic prompts, and environmental signals) to construct narrative structures and shared memory. Her current research explores projection-based systems and ecological scenarios as an expressive medium through which machines may begin to compose.

Jiayu’s recent solo exhibitions include "Wind Ringing" at the Zhejiang Art Museum (Hangzhou, 2024), "Waves of Code" at the CC Foundation (Shanghai, 2023), and "Tracing the Sky" at the Manchester International Festival (UK, 2019). Her work has been exhibited in major group exhibitions such as the 59th Venice Biennale (China Pavilion), Transmediale (Berlin), Interreality (Los Angeles), ART021 (Shanghai), Russia Ecological Art Biennale (Nizhny Novgorod), Bangalore Science & Technology Arts Festival (India), Guangzhou triennial, Beijing Media Art Biennale and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Urban Architecture Biennale (China), and also at institutions including the V&A, Watermans Art Centre, Saatchi Gallery, Helen Hamlyn Design Centre, York Art Gallery, UCCA Edge, Yuz Museum, CAFAM, and K11 Art Space. Meanwhile, she works with environmental organizations, including the WWF, Greenpeace, and Invisible Dust. Together, they have developed projects that focus on sustainability and climate change, and major museums and institutions have collected her artworks, including the Zhejiang Art Museum, the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, and the Xie Zilong Museum of Photography in Changsha.

Jiayu received her MA from the Royal College of Art (2012-2014). From 2015 to 2019, she taught media art at several institutions in China, serving as a Visiting lecturer and lecturer, including the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, and Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. She is currently a PhD researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London, under the Human and Machine Drawing Centre ( a Lab between the Department of Fine Arts and the School of Computing). She also serves as a co-chair of the Leonardo/ISAST LASER series.

She has received numerous honors, including the Wang Shiguo Young Artist Award (2024), GQ Men of the Year Young Artist (2023), BAZAAR Breakthrough Artist Award (2023), Forbes China 30 Under 30 (2020), Robb Report China: Best of the Best – Young Artist of the Year (2022&2020), She was shortlisted for the Porches Chinese Young Artist of the Year award (2024), the Lumen Prize (2017), and the Aesthetica Art Prize (2018).
