Sailing 巡航
Sailing proceeds from the electromagnetic field dispersed throughout the exhibition space as its point of departure, interrogating the modalities through which machine communication is transduced into computationally tractable parameters—namely, vectors, distances, and directional orientations. The work captures ambient electromagnetic fluctuations in real time, projecting them onto dynamic vectors situated within a high-dimensional embedding space, and, through continuous iterative algorithmic operations, engages in the retrieval and approximation of vectorial states.
What is rendered visible is neither the primary input nor the terminal output, but rather a condition of navigational suspension suspended between the two—a liminal state in which vectors traverse and iteratively align themselves across an expansive ocean of data, inscribing traces of varying intensity and temporal duration as they approach, pass alongside, and converge upon adjacent vectors. These computational kinetics are transposed in real time onto a triptych lighting array composed of 135,840 luminous nodes, thereby instantiating an architectural environment that is somatically accessible and spatially coextensive with the moving body. As visitors traverse this constructed space, the electromagnetic perturbations emitted by their portable devices continuously infiltrate the vectorial field, overlapping with proximal vectors and perpetually reconfiguring the topological distances and relational geometries among them.
This very configuration, in turn, serves as a material diagram of the contemporary condition in which we are immersed: within a reality that is increasingly mediated by the hegemonic logic of vectorization, how might we cohabit with and articulate a mode of coexistence alongside an alien semiotic system—that of the machine?
